I never thought I’d find myself in the middle of a rebellion against wizards, let alone on a simple trip to a city ahead of the circus. But here I am, traveling with Phoenix to Katia, a city that seems to be under attack from an insurgent cell inspired by a deep hatred by wizards – no, magic users as a whole. We’ve managed to gain some allies along the way, but in all honestly I’m not sure I trust them all.
The attack on the statue from those brigands was unexpected – how could I expect such a powerful explosion in such a peaceful place? But Phoenix and I were able to hold our own in the thick of battle. It was a relief when strangers – I believe their names were Raymond, Kal, Jarev, and Rolen – showed up to help us. But while Raymond’s smooth talking helped us embed ourselves in the terrorist cell that previously attacked us, Kal and Rolen’s cold-blooded killing of two retreating enemies left a sour taste in my mouth that I still haven’t quite recovered from.
I have done my own share of dirty work in my life, but I have a heart. These brigands may be attacking the city, but they’re clearly impoverished and desperate – not to mention they were no longer taking up arms against us. It’s not right to kill them without giving them a chance to surrender or defend themselves. Personally, I believe we should have followed them back and informed the proper authorities, but maybe I’m too naive. I am quite new to this land, after all.
Regardless, we managed to get some valuable information about the insurgents’ supply chain. The Star Moon Trading Company seems to be the source of their explosives in this demolition, but they receive their supply from a mysterious unknown party, an individual pretending to be Captain Beauregard was leading the insurgents and negotiating with that unknown before Rolen killed him – again, proof that a strategy of deduction and interrogation are the best route to the truth. I can only hope investigating this unknown leads us to the root of the problem.
But we still need to find more evidence before we can confront the Star Moon Trading Company or identify this unknown party. I believe that convincing someone important in the city, Captain Kip, to lend us a hand will help us get that evidence, or at the very least the ability to move more freely as we investigate the whole ordeal. To achieve the favor of this captain, and of the Beccian guard as a whole, I turned in one of the captured brigands, hoping it would help us gain some favor with the empire; unfortunately, the guard said he will be executed – which I feel quite guilty about – I know he had attacked us prior, and likely would kill, but the punishment didn’t seem to fit the crime in this particular situation.
I write this as we are escorted to the city, listening to Jarev talk with the guard and Rolen shove the prisoner along with the guards. I will update later after we talk with the Captain in this supposedly sacred lighthouse.
